The Cavern Club, located at 10 Mathew Street in Liverpool, is one of the most famous live music venues in the world. Opening in 1957 as a jazz club, its iconic vaulted brick cellars quickly became the epicenter of the 1960s "Merseybeat" sound.

The Beatles Connection

  • The Launchpad: The Beatles made their debut at the club on February 9, 1961. Between 1961 and 1963, they performed at the venue 292 times.

  • Discovered On-Site: Future manager Brian Epstein first saw the band perform at a Cavern Club lunchtime show in November 1961 before securing them their record deal.

Demolition & Reconstruction

  • 1973 Demolition: The original venue was closed and filled in with rubble in 1973 during construction work for the Merseyrail underground railway loop.

  • 1984 Rebuilding: A detailed reconstruction of the club opened in 1984, taking up roughly 70% of the original footprint.

  • Original Materials: Workers salvaged 15,000 original bricks from the site to construct the rebuilt interior. Another 5,000 bricks were sold to collectors to fund the project.

The Cavern Today

The Cavern Club remains a thriving live music venue operating seven days a week. Alongside Beatles tribute acts, it regularly hosts local breakthrough acts, up-and-coming indie bands, and major international artists—Paul McCartney even returned to play a landmark concert on its famous stage in 1999.
