Artist profile
Kate Bush
Kate Bush is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer born on July 30, 1958. Discovered as a teenager by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, she signed with EMI Records and rose to prominence in 1978 with her debut single "Wuthering Heights," which made history when it became the first self-written number-one hit by a female artist on the UK Singles Chart.
She followed this success with her debut album The Kick Inside (1978) and Lionheart (1978), establishing a distinct theatrical performance style and a multi-octave soprano vocal range. With her third studio album, Never for Ever (1980), she became the first British solo female artist to top the UK Albums Chart, and she achieved full production control over her work on the synthesizer-driven and experimental album The Dreaming (1982). Her commercial peak arrived with 1985's Hounds of Love, which featured the hit singles "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)" and "Cloudbusting." After releasing subsequent albums including The Sensual World (1989) and The Red Shoes (1993), Bush entered a lengthy hiatus from recording and performing.
She returned to music with the double album Aerial in 2005, followed by Director's Cut and 50 Words for Snow in 2011, and she completed a 22-date concert residency titled Before the Dawn at London's Eventim Apollo in 2014, marking her first live performances since 1979.
Her work experienced a massive global resurgence in 2022 when "Running Up That Hill" was featured in the Netflix series Stranger Things, propelling the track to the top of charts worldwide and earning her an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.
