Cotchford farm is a country house in East Sussex, it was at one point owned by Winnie-the-Pooh author Arthur Alan Milne. He used the area as the setting for the famous books, Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. The building is today listed Grade II.
Brian Jones bought the house in 1968 for £35.000, not knowing this would be the place where he was to pass away just a year later. On July 3rd 1969, Brian was to found dead in the swimming pool here. The coroner's verdict was one of misadventure -"swimming whilst under the influence of alcohol and drugs". However, since his death there have been suggestions in several books that Jones was murdered.
Director Stephen Woolley purchased the rights to several of the books claiming Brians death was a murder, among them one book written by his Swedish girlfriend at the time Anna Wohlin. Based on the books Wolley created the film 'Stoned' in 2005, which pictures Brians life at Cotchford farm up until his death. The film suggests Brian was murdered by a builder called Frank Thorogood, at one point the police reopened the investigation thanks to new information Stephen Wolley uncovered whilst researching material for the film. Surviving Stone's members were against the production of the film, resulting in a film about Brian Jones and the Rolling Stones, without any actual music by the Rolling Stones.
In 1994 the BBC produced and broadcast an episode where Brian Jones death was investigated, in this episode Rolling Stones chaffeur Tom Keylock claims Frank Thorogood confessed to the murder on his deathbed.
