Jim Morrison's grave wasn't officially marked until French officials placed a shield over it, this shield was stolen in 1973. In 1981 a Croatian sculptor named Mladen Mikulin placed a bust of Morrison and the new gravestone with Morrison's name at the grave to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death

The bust was to become defaced by vandals throughout the years until it was finally stolen in 1988. After the theft the sculptor Mikulin did create two new bronze portraits of Jim Morrison, but didn't have permission to place a new sculpture on the tomb.

In the 1990s a flat stone with a Greek inscription was placed on the grave, translated into English the enscription reads The one who fights his own demons, a reference to Jim Morrisons troubled life.
