Built in 1937, the Gaumont State Theatre was the largest movie palace ever built in England and the third largest in the United Kingdom. The theater's 4,004 seats were split between a massive balcony and an orchestra level. Although it was large, beautiful, and meticulously designed, it was less opulent than earlier Gaumonts, which were more directly influenced by the popularity of Art Deco.
